Crack Filling and Sealing

circle-big-crackCrack Filling and Sealing

Crack filling and sealing is one of the most important steps in good maintenance of asphalt paving. Cracks in the pavement allow water to penetrate into the asphalt pavement and base. During a typical winter, the combination of water and intermittent freezing cause spreading and expansion of the cracks causing them to continually grow larger in size. Once the water has penetrated the asphalt it can contribute to the gravel base heaving under the pavement.

Repairing minor cracks can go a long way toward eliminating alligator areas and potholes, which can help your pavement realize its full life span. Crack filling is also an essential precursor to successful asphalt seal coating and maintenance.

The First Step is to route all the cracks in the asphalt surface. This ensures that the crack will have uniform thickness, making for a stronger longer lasting bond.

The Second Step, the crack has to be blown out and dried to ensure proper adhesion of the hot applied crack fill material.

The Third Step. The first two steps are essential to prevent the crack from re-opening and getting any larger. Only after the first two steps are properly completed can the crack can be filled with hot rubberized crack filler.
